The calculator adds up every one-time cost of connecting, then compares it year by year with the ongoing cost of each option. Sewer means a monthly bill that rises over time. Septic means upkeep, pumping and an eventual replacement.

Most of the cost comes from the sewer lateral, the pipe from your house to the main, plus city fees. With a 150-foot run at $60 per foot, a $3,000 hookup fee, a $5,000 impact fee, permits, street repair, septic decommissioning and a 10% contingency, a typical conversion comes to about $23,210.
A 50-foot run brings that down to about $16,610, while a 500-foot run pushes it past $46,000. Rocky ground, pavement crossings and a grinder pump all add more.
It depends mostly on how much life your septic system has left. If the system is healthy, the monthly sewer bill usually costs more than pumping and upkeep, so septic often stays cheaper.

The rules vary by municipality and county health department, so confirm with your local utility before comparing costs. If connection is mandatory, the break-even question matters less than budgeting for the work.
An impact or capacity fee is a one-time charge that pays for your share of the treatment plant and trunk lines. It is separate from the hookup or tap fee, which covers the physical connection to the main.
