How the block estimate is calculated
It starts from your wall area, subtracts the openings, then multiplies by the blocks per square foot for your block size and adds waste. Courses and mortar follow from there. Here is the exact math.
Worked example — a 40 ft × 8 ft wall, standard 8″ block, +10%
Wall area: 40 × 8 = 320 sq ft
Blocks per sq ft: 144 ÷ (16 × 8) = 1.125
Blocks: 320 × 1.125 × 1.10 ≈ 397
Courses: 96″ ÷ 8 = 12 high | Mortar: 397 ÷ 100 × 3 ≈ 12 bags
≈ 397 blocks, 12 courses high, and about 12 bags of mortar for a 320 sq ft wall.

Work out the wall area as length times height, subtract any openings, then multiply by the blocks per square foot and add waste. A standard 8 by 8 by 16 inch block covers about 0.89 sq ft of wall, so you need about 1.125 blocks per square foot.
A 40 by 8 ft wall is 320 sq ft, so at about 1.125 blocks per square foot with 10% waste that’s roughly 397 blocks, plus mortar.
A standard concrete block has a 16 by 8 inch face including the mortar joint, which is 128 square inches, so you need about 1.125 blocks per square foot of wall.
Put another way, it takes roughly 112 to 113 blocks to build 100 square feet of wall. Half and other block sizes cover different areas, so confirm the size you’re buying.
Plan on about 3 bags of mortar mix per 100 blocks at a 3/8-inch joint, so a wall of 400 blocks needs roughly 12 bags. Blocks are bedded on their face shells rather than fully.
Because blocks are large, a single 80 lb bag lays only about 33 of them. Buy a little extra so you don’t stop mid-course, and mix only what you can lay before it sets.
A standard concrete masonry unit is nominally 8 by 8 by 16 inches, meaning 8 inches high, 8 inches wide, and 16 inches long including the mortar joint. The actual block is 3/8 inch smaller each way.
Blocks also come in 4, 6, 10, and 12 inch widths for different wall strengths, plus half blocks and corner and bond-beam units. The face size stays about 16 by 8 inches, so the blocks per square foot is the same.
Since a standard block is 8 inches high with its joint, each course adds 8 inches of height. Divide the wall height in inches by 8 to get the number of courses.
An 8 ft wall is 96 inches, so it’s 12 courses of block. For the length, divide by 16 inches per block to get the blocks per course, which helps you plan corners and half blocks.
Add about 5% to 10% for breakage, cuts at openings and corners, and the occasional cracked block. Around 10% is a safe default for most walls.
Use the higher end if the wall has lots of corners, openings, or cut blocks. It’s easier and cheaper to have a couple of spare blocks than to make another supply run mid-project.
In the U.S., standard concrete blocks run roughly $1 to $3 each for the block alone, with specialty and larger units costing more. Material for a wall is often a few dollars per square foot before mortar and labor.
Installed block walls, including mortar, reinforcement, and a mason’s labor, commonly run much higher per square foot. Get local quotes, since block and labor prices vary by region.
Many structural block walls are reinforced with vertical rebar set into cores that are then filled with grout, plus horizontal reinforcement in the bed joints or bond-beam courses. Requirements depend on the wall’s height, load, and local code.
Garden and low freestanding walls may need less, but foundation and tall walls usually need engineered reinforcement. Check your local building code and have structural walls reviewed by a professional.
