Clearance Hole Calculator

Pick the right drill bit for any inch screw or bolt. Choose the size, thread, fit, head style and material, and get the clearance drill, tap drill and thread percentage, minimum thread engagement, hardwood and softwood pilot holes, and the countersink or counterbore size and depth — with full drill charts and a downloadable PDF.

US inch fasteners. Clearance holes follow common close / normal / loose practice (ASME B18.2.8); tap drills give about 75% thread for UNC and UNF; pilot holes are typical values for wood screws (#2–#12) and lag screws (1/4"–1/2"). Drill sizes are shown as number, letter or fraction bits with the decimal and metric equivalent. Always test on scrap first — wood density, drill wander and the screw maker's spec can change the best size. Wear eye protection when drilling.

For a bolt with a nut, only the clearance hole matters. For a screw holding two parts, drill the clearance hole in the top part and the tap or pilot hole in the bottom part.
