How the screw count is calculated
Start with the surfaces that get sheeted — walls plus the ceiling — subtract the openings, add waste, then divide into sheets and lay a screw grid on each one from your framing and field spacing. Here is the exact math.
Worked example — 16 × 12 ft room, 9 ft walls, ceiling, 1 door + 2 windows, walls at 16 in OC, 4×8 sheets
Walls: 2 × (16 + 12) × 9 = 504 sq ft
Ceiling: 16 × 12 = 192 sq ft | Openings: 21 + (2 × 15) = 51 sq ft
Net area: 504 + 192 − 51 = 645 sq ft
With waste: 645 × 1.10 ≈ 710 sq ft
Sheets: ⌈710 ÷ 32⌉ = 23 sheets
Per sheet: (round(48÷16)+1) × (⌊96÷16⌋+1) = 4 × 7 = 28
Total: 23 × 28 = 644 screws → ⌈644 ÷ 320⌉ = 3 boxes
3 boxes of 1-1/4 in screws ≈ $18, about 2 lb of fasteners.
Ceilings tighten the field spacing to 12 inches, so they eat the most screws; wider 24 in framing crosses fewer lines per sheet, so the count drops. Same sheets, very different fastener totals.

A screw should bite at least 5/8 inch into wood framing. Longer isn’t better — over-long screws waste money and can split thin blocking.

On a 4-ft-wide sheet, 19.2 in OC framing works out the same as 16 in by this method — both cross four framing lines. Ceilings add screws because the field tightens to 12 inches.
