How the material estimate is calculated
It starts from your roof area in squares, adds waste, then converts to the field material you chose and layers on every accessory a real roof needs. Here is the exact math behind each output.
Worked example — a 2,000 sq ft roof in architectural asphalt shingles, +10%
Squares: 2,000 × 1.10 ÷ 100 = 22 squares
Shingles: 22 × 3 = 66 bundles
Underlayment: 22 ÷ 4 = 5.5 → 6 rolls | Nails: 22 × 2.5 ≈ 55 lb

Most asphalt shingles come three bundles to the square, which is 100 sq ft of roof. So a 22-square roof needs about 66 bundles.
Always check your specific product, since some heavy architectural and designer shingles run four bundles per square. Buy by the square once waste is included and keep the bundles from one production run for color match.
Field shingles are only part of the order. Every roof also needs underlayment over the whole deck, ice-and-water shield at the eaves and valleys, a starter strip along the eaves, ridge cap over the peaks and hips, drip edge at the eaves and rakes, and the right fasteners.
Flashing at walls, chimneys, and penetrations, plus ridge vent for attic airflow, round out the list. Leaving these off is the most common way a material estimate comes up short.
Weight and lifespan vary enormously. Asphalt shingles weigh about 230 to 430 lbs per square and last 15 to 30 years; metal is light at roughly 50 to 150 lbs and lasts 40 to 70 years.
Wood shakes are about 300 to 400 lbs and last 30 to 40 years, while clay and concrete tile run 600 to 1,000 lbs and slate 800 to 1,500 lbs, lasting 50 to 100 years. Heavy materials often need a reinforced roof structure.
Underlayment covers the whole roof deck, so you need at least as much as your roof area plus a little overlap. Divide your squares by the roll’s coverage and round up.
Felt rolls commonly cover about 4 squares each, while many synthetic rolls cover 10 squares. Add ice-and-water shield separately along the eaves and in the valleys, where codes in cold climates often require it.
Starter strip runs along every eave, and ridge cap covers every ridge and hip, so both are measured in linear feet. Measure those edges and divide by the product’s coverage per bundle or box.
A bundle of hip-and-ridge shingles typically covers about 20 to 35 linear feet, and starter comes by the linear foot too. These trim pieces are easy to forget but essential for a weather-tight, finished roof.
Asphalt shingles use about four nails each in normal conditions, and six in high-wind zones, which works out to roughly 2.5 lbs of roofing nails per square.
A 22-square roof needs about 55 lbs of nails. Metal and tile use their own screws or clips instead, so match the fastener to the material and follow the manufacturer’s nailing pattern for the warranty to hold.
