How the board count is calculated
Start with the coverage width of one board — the board plus its gap — stack rows across the deck width, run each row the deck length, add waste, then divide into whole boards. Here is the exact math.
Worked example — 16 × 12 ft deck, 5.5 in boards, 3/16 in gap, 16 ft boards, straight pattern
Coverage width: 5.5 + 0.1875 = 5.6875 in
Rows: ⌈(12 × 12) ÷ 5.6875⌉ = ⌈144 ÷ 5.6875⌉ = 26 rows
Coverage lf: 26 × 16 = 416 lf
With waste: 416 × 1.05 ≈ 437 lf
Boards: ⌈437 ÷ 16⌉ = 28 boards
Board cost: 437 × $2.00 ≈ $874
28 boards + face screws, roughly $900 in decking materials at ~$4.90 / sq ft.
Same deck, same boards — the pattern alone swings the buy from 28 to 32 boards. Every angled cut leaves an offcut, so herringbone and diagonal need the biggest waste cushion.

Count the rows that stack across the deck width, then multiply by the deck length for linear feet. Each row covers the board width plus the gap — a 5-1/2 inch board with a 3/16 inch gap covers about 5.7 inches, so a 12 foot wide deck needs 26 rows.
For a 16 by 12 foot deck that’s about 416 linear feet, or roughly 437 feet once you add 5 percent waste — 28 boards at 16 feet each. Diagonal and picture-frame patterns waste more, so buy a few extra.
Linear feet is rows times deck length. First find the coverage width of one board — board width plus the gap — then divide the deck width by it and round up to get the number of rows.
Multiply rows by the deck length in feet for coverage linear feet, then add waste for the pattern. A 16 by 12 foot deck works out to 26 rows times 16 feet, about 416 linear feet before waste.
Leave about 1/8 to 1/4 inch between boards for drainage and expansion. A 3/16 inch gap is a common middle ground for wood installed dry.
Wet pressure-treated boards shrink as they dry, so gap them tighter — sometimes almost butted — while kiln-dried, composite, and PVC boards keep the gap you set. Follow the board maker’s spacing guidance.
Pressure-treated pine is the budget standard but needs sealing and moves as it dries. Cedar is naturally rot-resistant, light, and warm-toned but still needs upkeep.
Composite and PVC are low-maintenance and dimensionally stable at a higher price, and usually run on 12 inch joists with hidden clips. Tropical hardwood like ipe is extremely dense and durable, but you pre-drill it and pay a premium.
Straight boards run across the joists waste the least — about 5 percent for cuts and defects. A picture-frame border adds around 12 percent.
Diagonal 45-degree layouts waste roughly 15 percent because every board is cut on an angle, and herringbone can reach 20 percent. Angled patterns also often need tighter 12 inch joist spacing to support the ends.
16 inches on center is typical for straight-laid wood and many composites. Step down to 12 inches on center for diagonal layouts and for composite or PVC boards, which sag more than wood.
Always check the board maker’s span rating — it sets the maximum joist spacing for your specific product and layout, and angled boards effectively span farther between joists.
Grooved composite and PVC boards are made for hidden clips that seat in the side groove, leaving a fastener-free surface. Plan on about 175 clips per 100 square feet, including starter clips.
Solid boards without a groove get face screws — roughly two per board at each joist, about 350 screws per 100 square feet. Match the fastener to your board and framing.
Decking boards alone run from around $2 per linear foot for pressure-treated up to $6 or more for tropical hardwood, so material cost swings widely with the board you pick.
