How the primer estimate is calculated
It starts from your wall area — perimeter times height — adds any ceilings or slab, and subtracts the doors and windows you’ll skip. Then it multiplies by coats, divides by the primer type’s coverage, and rounds up to whole gallons. Here is the exact math.
Worked example — a 14 × 16 ft room, 9 ft walls + 200 sq ft ceiling, drywall/PVA primer, 1 coat
Walls: 60 ft perimeter × 9 ft = 540 sq ft
Extra (ceiling): 200 sq ft
Openings: (2 × 15) + (1 × 20) = 50 sq ft → Net: 540 + 200 − 50 = 690 sq ft
Primer gallons (PVA, 350, 1 coat): 690 × 1 ÷ 350 = 1.97 → 2 gal
≈ 2 gallons of drywall/PVA primer for 1 coat, about $44 at $22 / gallon — before any labor.

Primer type drives both coverage and price. Block filler is a thick, high-build product for porous block, so it covers roughly a third as much as drywall primer — set the type so the estimate is right.

Gallons = area × coats ÷ coverage, rounded up. Masonry block filler can need about 3× the product of drywall primer for the identical wall. For 2 coats, double the area before dividing.

One coat is the default and covers most interior prep. Each extra coat multiplies the product you buy, so add coats only where the surface actually needs them.

Add up the area you’re sealing — wall perimeter times height, plus any ceilings or slab — then subtract about 15 sq ft per window and 20 sq ft per door. Multiply by the number of coats, divide by the primer’s coverage, and round up to whole gallons.
A 14 × 16 room with 9 ft walls, a 200 sq ft ceiling, two windows and one door is about 690 sq ft to prime. At one coat of drywall/PVA primer (about 350 sq ft per gallon), that’s about 2 gallons.
Coverage depends on the primer type more than anything else. Drywall/PVA and multi-surface primers cover about 350 sq ft per gallon, and stain-blocking and bonding primers about 300.
Masonry block filler is the outlier at roughly 130 sq ft per gallon, because it’s a thick product that fills the pores of block and brick. Always check the can and prime a test area on porous surfaces.
Match the primer to the surface or the problem. Use drywall/PVA on new drywall, stain-blocking for water stains, smoke, and knot or tannin bleed, and bonding primer on glossy, slick surfaces like tile, laminate, or gloss trim.
For concrete block or brick, use a masonry block filler; for bare exterior siding, an exterior wood primer. A multi-surface primer handles everyday prep and light color changes.
Over a sound, previously painted surface in a similar color, a self-priming paint often does the job without a separate primer coat. Spot-prime any patches, stains, or bare spots first.
Prime fully for new drywall, bare wood, masonry, big color changes, or any stains — smoke, water, or tannin — that would otherwise bleed through the topcoat.
One coat is standard for most jobs and is all that sealed drywall or light prep usually needs. The calculator defaults to one coat.
Use two coats for bare wood, very porous block, or heavy stains that a single coat can’t fully block. Each coat multiplies the product you need, so coats drive the total alongside area.
Concrete block and brick are porous and irregular, so a masonry block filler is a thick, high-build product that fills those pores rather than laying a thin film. That drops coverage to around 130 sq ft per gallon.
That’s roughly a third of what drywall primer covers, so the same wall can need about three times the product. Size masonry jobs generously and check the can’s rate.
Self-priming (paint-and-primer) paints work well over sound, previously painted surfaces and modest color changes, saving a separate coat. They aren’t a substitute for a problem-specific primer.
For stains, bare wood, glossy surfaces, or masonry, a dedicated primer bonds and blocks far better than a self-priming topcoat. Use the right primer wherever the surface demands it.
For a drastic color change — especially light over dark — ask the store to tint the primer toward your topcoat color. A tinted primer helps the finish coats cover in fewer passes.
Most primers dry white or gray, so tinting is optional but can save a finish coat on bold colors. Keep bonding and stain-blocking primers within the tintable limits on the label.
In the U.S., primer runs from about $18 a gallon for basic PVA up to $40–$45 for shellac, bonding, or premium stain-blocking primers. Multi-surface and exterior wood primers sit in between.
Because most rooms need only a gallon or two, choosing the right primer adds little to the job but saves finish coats and prevents bleed-through. Add labor if you hire out.
