How the softener size is calculated
A softener is sized on one number: the grains of hardness your home removes between regenerations. Everything else — resin volume, tank rating, salt use — follows from it. Here is the exact math.
Worked example — 4 people, 15 GPG water, a trace of iron
Compensated hardness: 15 + (0.3 ppm iron × 4) = 16.2 GPG
Daily water: 4 people × 75 = 300 gal/day
Daily load: 300 × 16.2 = 4,860 grains/day
Capacity needed: 4,860 × 7 days = 34,020 grains
Resin: 34,020 ÷ 24,000 (9 lb dose) = 1.42 cu ft
≈ a 1.5 cu ft unit — sold as a 48,000 grain softener — using about 55 lb of salt a month.

Most U.S. utilities publish hardness in the annual water quality report, usually in ppm. Divide ppm by 17.1 to get grains per gallon. Softening is generally worth it from about 7 GPG up.

The number on the box is the maximum-dose rating: 32,000 grains per cubic foot of resin. Working capacity is what you actually get at a 9 lb salt dose, which is the setting most units ship on.

A higher dose pulls more grains from the same resin, so the tank runs longer between cycles — but each pound of salt does less work. Going from 6 lb to 15 lb costs roughly 60–70% more salt for exactly the same softened water.

Softener size comes from how much hardness your home removes in a week, not from square footage. Multiply your daily water use by your compensated hardness to get grains per day, then multiply by the days you want between regenerations.
A four-person home using 300 gallons a day at 15 GPG removes about 4,500 grains/day, or roughly 32,000 grains a week, which points to a 1.5 cu ft unit sold as a 48,000 grain softener. Larger households and harder water move up the tank sizes from there.
The standard method is people × gallons per day × compensated hardness × days between regenerations. That gives the grain capacity the softener has to deliver in one cycle.
Divide that capacity by the working capacity of the resin at your salt setting — commonly 24,000 grains per cu ft at a 9 lb dose — to get the cubic feet of resin needed, then round up to the next standard tank size.
Compensated hardness adds dissolved iron and manganese to your raw hardness number, because the resin has to strip those out as well. The usual allowance is 4 GPG for each ppm of iron and 6 GPG for each ppm of manganese.
Water at 15 GPG with 0.5 ppm of iron behaves like 17 GPG. Sizing on raw hardness alone leaves an iron-bearing well short on capacity, and the resin fouls faster than it should.
Salt use follows the grains removed, not the size of the tank. Divide the grains removed per month by the grains each pound of salt regenerates — about 3,333 at a 6 lb dose and 2,000 at a 15 lb dose.
A typical four-person home on 15 GPG water removes roughly 146,000 grains a month and burns 45 to 75 lb of salt depending on the dose setting. That is between one and two 40 lb bags a month.
No. A tank that is too large regenerates so rarely that water channels through the resin bed, leaving most of the bed idle and prone to fouling and bacterial growth.
Most control valves also force a regeneration on a calendar override, commonly every 14 days, so an oversized unit still burns salt on a schedule it does not need. Sizing for a cycle every three to seven days keeps the bed exercised.
Every three to seven days is the healthy range for a metered softener, with seven days as the common design target. That keeps the resin bed active without wasting salt on unnecessary cycles.
If a unit runs longer than about 14 days between cycles it is oversized for the water, and the valve will usually force a regeneration anyway. If it regenerates daily it is undersized, and the resin wears out faster.
No, it costs more. A higher dose squeezes more grains out of each cubic foot of resin, so the tank runs longer between cycles — but it removes fewer grains per pound of salt.
At a 6 lb dose each pound of salt handles about 3,333 grains; at 15 lb it handles only 2,000. The higher setting can cost 60–70% more in salt each year for exactly the same softened water, so the real trade is a smaller tank against a bigger salt bill.
Potassium chloride works in any standard softener and adds potassium rather than sodium to the softened water, which suits households watching sodium intake or discharging to a sensitive septic system.
It regenerates slightly less efficiently, so most manufacturers advise raising the dose by about 10%, and it typically costs several times more per bag. Many homes compromise by keeping one unsoftened cold tap for drinking and cooking instead.
