A septic tank is a living system. The checker scores 17 products and habits across five categories, where every safe answer scores 0. The total, out of 100, then shortens your pumping interval to show what those habits cost in tank life.

The safest choices are products that break down quickly and do not kill bacteria. That means plant-based or low-suds liquid HE laundry detergent, septic-safe or quick-dissolve toilet paper, plain soap for most cleaning, and a drain snake or enzyme product instead of caustic drain opener.
The products that cause the most harm are powder detergent, heavy chlorine bleach, daily disinfectants, liquid fabric softener, and anything marketed as a flushable wipe.
In small amounts, yes. A cup of bleach in one or two wash loads a week is diluted enough for the tank to recover, and the checker scores it at just 2 of 8 points.
Three or more bleach loads a week scores 5 points, and daily use or pouring bleach straight down a drain scores the full 8, because repeated doses knock the bacteria down faster than they can regrow. Oxygen bleach is a gentler option for whites.
No. No wipe sold as flushable breaks down at the speed a septic tank works. Wipes mat together, snag on baffles, and are a leading cause of pump and outlet failures.
