How to Use the LED Savings Calculator
Compare your existing lighting to an LED retrofit — and see the annual savings, payback, and net return — in four steps.
Describe your current lighting
Pick the existing bulb type and set the number of fixtures, watts each, hours per day, days per week, your electricity rate, and the life and cost of a replacement bulb.
Enter the LED replacement
Set the LED wattage, rated life, and cost per fixture. Add labor per bulb change if someone’s paid to swap them, and an optional cooling credit for air-conditioned spaces.
Add project costs & rebates
Include any installation cost and utility rebate per fixture, then choose an analysis period, an expected annual rate increase, and your grid’s CO₂ factor.
Read your result & save it
See year-one savings, payback, ROI, kWh and CO₂ avoided, and a year-by-year schedule with the break-even year flagged. Then download the branded PDF report.
What’s Included
Everything you need to price an LED retrofit honestly — energy, bulb replacement, labor, and rebates all in one place.
Year-one & lifetime savings
Compares the full annual cost of your current bulbs against LEDs, then projects net savings across your chosen analysis period.
Three savings sources
Breaks the annual saving into energy, maintenance and labor, and an optional cooling-load credit — so you see exactly where the money comes from.
Payback & ROI after rebates
Nets product, install, and utility rebates into an upfront cost, then reports the payback period and return on investment over the period.
Six existing bulb types
Start from incandescent, halogen, CFL, fluorescent tube, or HID / metal halide — or a mixed set — then set the exact wattage and life to match.
Replacement labor modeling
Counts how many bulb changes you avoid each year and the labor behind them — the hidden cost that makes long-life LEDs pay off in hard-to-reach fixtures.
Year-by-year schedule & PDF
Projects savings with an annual rate increase, highlights the break-even year, and downloads as a branded two-page report.

Get an Honest LED Estimate
Seven habits that make your numbers realistic — and help you retrofit in the right order.
- 1Use an all-in electricity rate. Pull your blended cost per kWh from a recent bill, including delivery and taxes. That’s the number your lighting energy is actually charged at.
- 2Match lumens, not just watts. An LED that draws a fraction of the watts should still put out the same brightness. Check the lumen rating so you don’t under-light the room chasing a lower wattage.
- 3Count labor for hard-to-reach fixtures. High ceilings, ladders, or a paid electrician make every bulb change costly. Enter labor per change and the long life of LEDs starts paying off on maintenance alone.
- 4Claim utility rebates. Many utilities pay a few dollars per qualifying LED fixture, cutting your upfront cost and shortening payback. Enter the per-fixture rebate so the net cost is real.
- 5Add a cooling credit in AC spaces. LEDs shed far less heat, so air conditioning works less. In a cooled space, a small cooling-load credit captures that extra saving on top of the lighting energy.
- 6Retrofit your longest-running fixtures first. The lights that run the most hours return the most, fastest. Run those through the calculator before the closet bulb that’s on ten minutes a day.
- 7Factor in rising rates. Electricity has historically climbed a few percent a year, so the same kilowatt-hours you save are worth more each year. The lifetime projection builds that increase in.
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most common questions about LED savings, payback, and when to switch.
How do I calculate LED savings versus my current bulbs?
The core is the wattage drop. Multiply the watts saved per fixture by the number of fixtures and the hours they run each year to get kilowatt-hours saved, then multiply by your electricity rate. Swapping forty 60 W bulbs for 9 W LEDs at 10 hours a day, for example, saves a lot of kWh a year. This calculator does the full version: it adds the money saved on bulb replacements and labor, an optional cooling-load credit, and any rebates, then reports the year-one saving, payback, and net return over your chosen period.
What wattage LED replaces my old bulb?
Match on brightness (lumens), not wattage, since LEDs produce the same light for far less power. As rough equivalents, a 60 W incandescent is about a 9 W LED, a 75 W is around 11 W, and a 100 W is roughly 15 W — each delivering similar lumens. Halogens are close to incandescent, while CFLs already use less, so the LED saving over a CFL is smaller. Enter the actual LED wattage from the product you’re considering for the most accurate result.
Why do bulb life and replacement labor matter?
Energy is only part of the story. An incandescent might last around 1,000 hours while an LED lasts 25,000, so over the same period you buy — and change — far fewer bulbs. Each change costs the price of a bulb plus the time to swap it. In hard-to-reach or paid-labor settings, that avoided maintenance can rival the energy saving. The calculator prorates replacements per year for both the old and new bulbs, so the comparison reflects the true cost of ownership, not just the meter.
What is the cooling load credit?
Old bulbs waste much of their energy as heat, and in an air-conditioned space that heat has to be removed — so cutting lighting wattage also lightens the AC’s workload. The cooling credit adds that secondary saving as a percentage of your lighting energy savings; a typical cooled commercial space sees somewhere in the range of 5–15%. Leave it at zero for unconditioned areas, or in winter-dominated climates where lamp heat partly offsets heating. It only adds savings where you’re actually paying to cool the space.
How does the payback and ROI calculation work?
The calculator adds up the LED product cost and installation, subtracts any utility rebates to get a net upfront cost, then tracks cumulative savings year by year. Payback is the point where those savings have repaid that upfront cost — the schedule flags the exact break-even year. ROI is the net saving over the whole analysis period divided by the upfront cost, expressed as a percentage. Because it raises your rate by the annual increase you set, later years save a little more, which is why longer-run fixtures reach payback fastest.
Are LED rebates available, and how do I find them?
LED rebates are mostly offered by electric utilities rather than the federal government, and they vary widely by provider and program, so confirm what’s current before relying on a figure. Many utilities pay a few dollars per qualifying fixture — often more for commercial or high-efficiency products — and some run instant point-of-sale discounts at retailers. Check your utility’s rebate portal or the ENERGY STAR rebate finder with your ZIP code, note the per-fixture amount and any product requirements, then enter that amount in the calculator so your payback reflects what you’ll actually pay.
