How the roof estimate is calculated
A roof is bigger than the house below it, because the slope stretches the surface. The calculator takes your flat plan area, multiplies by a pitch factor to get true roof area, adds waste, then converts to squares and bundles. Here is the exact math.
Worked example — a 40 ft × 30 ft footprint (1,200 sq ft plan), 6/12 pitch
Pitch multiplier: √(6² + 12²) ÷ 12 = √180 ÷ 12 ≈ 1.118
Roof area: 1,200 × 1.118 ≈ 1,342 sq ft
Area to buy (+10%): 1,342 × 1.10 ≈ 1,476 sq ft
Squares: 1,476 ÷ 100 = 14.8 → 15 | Bundles: 15 × 3 = 45
≈ 1,342 sq ft of roof → 15 squares and about 45 shingle bundles, plus underlayment.

Start with the roof’s plan area — the building footprint plus overhangs as seen from above — then multiply by a pitch factor that accounts for the slope. A steeper roof has more surface than the flat footprint below it.
For a 40 × 30 ft footprint (1,200 sq ft) at a 6/12 pitch, the pitch factor is about 1.118, so the roof area is roughly 1,342 sq ft before waste.
A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface. It’s the standard unit roofers use to quote and order materials, so a 2,000 sq ft roof is 20 squares.
Most roofing products are sold and priced by the square. Asphalt shingles, for example, usually come three bundles to the square, and underlayment and other materials are counted the same way.
Pitch is the slope, written as rise in inches per 12 inches of run, like 6/12. The steeper the pitch, the more actual roof surface sits above the same footprint, found with a pitch multiplier of the square root of (rise squared plus 144), divided by 12.
A 4/12 roof multiplies the plan area by about 1.05, a 6/12 by 1.12, and a 12/12 by 1.41 — so a steep roof can have over 40% more area than the footprint suggests.
Most asphalt shingles come three bundles to the square, so multiply your total squares by three and round up to whole bundles. A 15-square roof needs about 45 bundles.
Buy by the square once waste is included, and keep the bundle count from the same production run so the color matches. Always check your specific shingle, since some premium products run four bundles per square.
Add about 10% for a simple gable roof, and 15% or more for roofs with hips, valleys, dormers, or lots of cuts, where more material is trimmed and wasted.
Complex roofs and architectural shingles that must be matched across cuts waste more. The waste is added on top of the pitch-adjusted area, and it’s better to have a spare bundle than to come up short mid-job.
Pitch is the rise over a 12-inch run. Hold a level horizontally against the roof or a rafter, measure 12 inches along it, then measure straight down from the 12-inch mark to the roof — that drop in inches is your pitch, such as 6/12.
You can also use a pitch or angle app, or measure a rafter and the run in the attic. Common residential pitches range from about 4/12 to 9/12.
