Seven habits that give you even color, a healthy lawn, and no runoff into the storm drain.
- 1Nitrogen sets the rate. The first number is the one that matters for how much you spread — everything else follows from it. A 46-0-0 bag and a 10-0-4 bag deliver the same feeding at very different weights of product.
- 2Calibrate the spreader, don’t trust the dial. Settings on the hopper are approximations and vary with granule size and walking speed. Weigh out enough product for a known area, spread it on the driveway, and see where you actually land.
- 3Two half-rate passes at right angles. One heavy pass turns any drift or overlap into a visible stripe for the next month. Splitting the rate and crossing the second pass over the first hides small errors almost completely.
- 4Measure the turf, not the lot. Fertilizer rates are per 1,000 sq ft of grass. Counting the house, driveway and beds inflates your area, so you buy too much and spread it too thin to do any good.
- 5Sweep hard surfaces back onto the lawn. Granules left on the driveway or sidewalk wash straight into storm drains and then into local water. A broom takes thirty seconds and is required by law in some places.
- 6Watch the weather and the turf. Skip application before heavy rain, on frozen ground, or on dormant or drought-stressed grass. Most granular products want watering in afterwards — check the label, since some need to stay dry.
- 7Soil test before you buy phosphorus. Established lawns rarely need it, many states restrict it outright, and a $15–$25 test through your county extension office tells you what your soil is actually short of instead of guessing.

What do the three numbers on a fertilizer bag mean?
They are percentages by weight of nitrogen, phosphate and potash, always in that order. A 40 lb bag of 24-0-6 is 24% nitrogen — about 9.6 lb of actual N — with no phosphate and 6% potash. Nitrogen drives colour and growth and is what sets your application rate; potash supports stress tolerance; phosphate helps root establishment and is mostly needed for new seedings. One detail that trips people up when comparing a bag to a soil test: the second and third numbers are reported as oxides, P₂O₅ and K₂O, not as elemental phosphorus and potassium.
How much fertilizer do I need per 1,000 square feet?
Divide the pounds of nitrogen you want by the nitrogen percentage on the bag, expressed as a decimal. To put down 0.9 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft using a 24-0-6 product, that is 0.9 ÷ 0.24, or about 3.8 lb of product per 1,000 sq ft — roughly 19 lb across a 5,000 sq ft lawn. The same 0.9 lb rate from a 10% nitrogen organic product would take 9 lb per 1,000 sq ft instead, which is why comparing bags by price alone is misleading. The calculator does this conversion and also tells you how many bags that adds up to.
How much nitrogen does my lawn need per year?
It varies a lot by species, which is why the calculator asks. Fine fescue and centipedegrass are genuinely low-input and want only about 1 to 2 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft a year — centipede in particular is damaged by overfeeding. Kentucky bluegrass, ryegrass and tall fescue sit around 2 to 4 lb, while bermudagrass in full sun can take 4 to 6. Spread that annual total across several feedings rather than delivering it all at once, and time them to your grass: cool-season lawns are fed most heavily in autumn, warm-season lawns through summer.
Can too much fertilizer burn my lawn?
Yes. Fertilizer salts pull moisture out of the grass, so an overdose leaves yellow or brown scorched patches, usually in the exact pattern of wherever the spreader dwelled or overlapped. The usual guideline is to stay at or under one pound of quick-release nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft in a single feeding — slow-release nitrogen is far more forgiving because it meters itself out over weeks. The calculator works out the quick-release portion from your bag’s slow-release percentage and warns you when a planned application crosses that line. If you do spill or over-apply, water the area heavily and promptly.
Why is phosphorus restricted, and do I need it?
Phosphorus that washes off lawns into lakes and rivers feeds algae blooms, so a number of states have passed laws restricting its use on established turf unless a soil test shows a deficiency or you are seeding a new lawn. That is why so many bags now read 24-0-6 or similar with a zero in the middle. Most established lawns have adequate phosphorus already, so the honest answer for the majority of homeowners is that you do not need it. Check your own state or municipal rule before buying a bag that contains it, and get a soil test if you suspect a genuine shortfall.
Why does my lawn have dark green stripes after fertilizing?
Striping is an application pattern problem, not a product problem. A broadcast spreader throws heavier near the centre of its swath and lighter at the edges, so if your lanes do not overlap correctly you get alternating rich and pale bands; a drop spreader leaves a pale gap wherever two lanes did not quite meet. The fix is to halve the rate and make two passes at right angles to each other, so the second pass covers the weak spots of the first. The calculator gives you the per-pass setting and the walking distance for exactly that approach — and if you turn the split option off, it warns you what you are risking.
