Everything starts with one number: the flow of a single head at the pressure it actually runs at. Multiply that by heads, minutes, zones, and watering days, and you have gallons — then your utility rate turns gallons into dollars. Here is the exact math.

Worked example — a 6-zone system with four rotors per zone

Nozzle rating: 3.0 GPM at 45 PSI, running at 45 PSI
Zone flow: 4 heads × 3.0 = 12.0 GPM
Per cycle: 12.0 × 20 min = 240 gallons per zone
Per watering day: 240 × 6 zones = 1,440 gallons
Per month: 1,440 × 3 days × 4.33 = ~18,700 gallons ≈ at $6.50 per 1,000 gallons, that’s about $122 a month, or roughly $729 across a six-month season.

This is why sprays and rotors should never share a zone — by the time the rotor area is watered, the spray area has had roughly three times as much. Most cool-season lawns need about 1 to 1.5 inches a week including rainfall.

The flow, pressure, zone-sizing, and billing questions people ask most before designing a system or challenging a water bill.


Zone flow is the flow of one head multiplied by the number of heads on that zone. Start with the nozzle’s rated flow from the manufacturer chart, adjust it for the pressure the head actually runs at, then multiply by the head count.

For example, six gear rotors rated at 3.0 GPM each, running at their rated pressure, draw 18 GPM as a zone. The calculator does the pressure adjustment for you once you enter the rated flow, the rated pressure, and your operating pressure.

Flow rises with the square root of pressure, not in a straight line. A head rated at 3.0 GPM at 45 PSI delivers about 3.46 GPM at 60 PSI and about 2.65 GPM at 35 PSI — so a third more pressure buys only about 15% more water.

That square-root relationship is why raising pressure is an inefficient way to cover more ground, and why a pressure drop across a long lateral quietly reduces output at the far heads. It also drives misting, which wastes water to drift and evaporation.

The limit is your available supply flow, not a fixed head count. A common design rule is to keep total zone flow at or below about 75% of what your service line can deliver, leaving headroom for friction loss and household use.

With 12 GPM available, that means roughly 9 GPM of heads per zone: about three mid-range rotors, or five half-circle spray heads. Fewer heads per zone means more zones and a longer watering window, which is the trade-off the calculator makes visible.

Multiply zone flow by run time to get gallons per cycle, then scale by zones, watering days, and weeks. A six-zone system at 12 GPM per zone, running 20 minutes per zone three days a week, uses about 1,440 gallons per watering day and roughly 18,700 gallons a month.

That is a large number next to typical indoor use, which is why irrigation often doubles or triples a summer water bill. Run time and watering frequency move the total far more than head type does.

Multiply your monthly irrigation gallons by your utility’s volume rate. At $6.50 per 1,000 gallons, about 18,700 gallons a month works out to roughly $122 a month, or around $729 across a six-month season.

Rates vary widely by utility and many use tiered pricing, where heavy summer use pushes you into a higher tier. Check a recent bill for your rate and whether tiers apply before relying on a flat-rate estimate.

Precipitation rate is how fast a zone applies water, in inches per hour, calculated as 96.25 × zone GPM ÷ zone area in sq ft. It converts flow into something you can compare to what the lawn actually needs.

It matters because head types differ sharply: fixed sprays apply water several times faster than rotors. Mixing them on one zone means one area is overwatered by the time the other is adequately watered.

It depends on your utility. Many bill sewer based on water volume, which means irrigation water that never enters the sewer still gets charged, sometimes nearly doubling the cost per gallon.

A number of utilities offer a separate irrigation or deduct meter that removes the sewer charge from outdoor use, though there is usually an installation cost and a monthly fee. Contact your water provider to see whether one is available and how long it takes to pay for itself.

Run time should deliver the water the landscape needs, which depends on the zone’s precipitation rate. Most cool-season lawns need roughly 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week including rainfall, so a zone applying 0.6 in/hr needs about 100 to 150 minutes weekly, split across watering days.

A fast-applying spray zone reaches the same total in a fraction of that time. Deep, infrequent watering encourages deeper roots, but heavy soils may need the time split into shorter cycles to avoid runoff.
