- 1Be honest about furnishing level. The multiplier moves your total by a wide margin. If closets are full and rooms are crowded, choose Packed full rather than Average.
- 2Don’t forget the garage. Garages, basements, and sheds carry more volume per room than bedrooms, and they’re the easiest space to overlook when counting rooms.
- 3Keep the buffer at 10–15%. Containers get loaded by hand, not by algorithm. A buffer leaves room to stack, pad, and strap without a last-minute repack.
- 4Two smaller units can beat one big one. If utilization comes out low, check the comparison list — a different size mix may waste far less space.
- 5Disassemble before you estimate. Bed frames, tables, and shelving pack much flatter than their listed volume, so you may fit more than the number suggests.
- 6Check driveway and permit rules. Container size is limited by where it can legally sit. Confirm clearance, surface, and any street-placement permit before booking.

How does the POD size calculator work?
It builds your total volume in cubic feet from three inputs: the rooms you’re moving, the boxes and large items you’re taking, and a loading buffer for stacking room. Room volumes are scaled by your furnishing level, so a packed home counts for more than a sparse one. That total is then matched against the container sizes your chosen provider offers to recommend the best setup, how many units you need, and how full each would be.
What size POD do I need for my home?
As a rough guide, the smallest containers suit a studio or a single room, mid-size units handle roughly a 2 to 3 bedroom home, and the largest sizes are aimed at 3 to 4 bedroom homes. Larger households commonly need more than one container. These are starting points only — a heavily furnished home can easily need the next size up, which is why the calculator sizes from your actual room and item counts rather than bedrooms alone.
How do PODS, U-Box, and PACK-RAT containers differ?
They offer different size lineups. PODS and 1-800-PACK-RAT each provide a small, medium, and large container, with the small sizes differing slightly between them. U-Haul’s U-Box uses a single, much smaller container instead, so a full-home move typically means several units rather than one large one. Because the sizes differ, the same volume can produce a very different recommendation depending on which provider you select.
What is the loading buffer and why does it matter?
No container packs to 100% of its rated volume. Odd shapes leave gaps, and you need working space to stack, pad, and strap items so nothing shifts in transit. The loading buffer adds a percentage on top of your belongings to account for that. Around 10 to 15% is realistic; raise it if you have many awkward items, lower it only if you’re confident in a very tight pack.
Is it cheaper to get one large container or two small ones?
It depends on the provider’s pricing and how efficiently each option fills. One container generally means one delivery, one pickup, and one transport charge, which usually favors a single larger unit. But if a large container would sit half empty, two smaller ones can waste far less space.
