For a typical 3-bedroom home with a conventional gravity system on average soil at Midwest pricing, the installed cost runs about $8,100 to $20,550, with $14,300 the most likely figure. That covers the tank, drainfield, excavation labor, permits, and site restoration.
Engineered systems cost more on the same site: roughly $17,750 most likely for a chamber system, $26,150 for an aerobic treatment unit, $29,000 for a sand filter, and $31,100 for a mound. Region, soil, bedroom count, and site access all move the number.
A full replacement of the tank and drainfield usually costs more than a new install on the same lot, because the old system has to be pumped, removed or abandoned, and the crew works around an established yard.
For a 3-bedroom conventional system at Midwest pricing, replacement runs about $8,950 to $23,550, most likely $16,250. Removal and abandonment alone adds roughly $600 to $2,150. If the soil has failed and the county now requires a mound or aerobic system, the cost can double.

The field itself is the largest line item, and it grows with poor soil: clay soil makes the field about 35% larger, and a high water table about 60% larger, often with an engineered design on top.
Health departments size tanks by bedroom count, not by how many people live in the home. A 1,000-gallon tank is a common minimum for 3 bedrooms, with roughly 250 gallons added per extra bedroom:

Fast-draining sandy loam allows a smaller conventional field. Slow clay soil, shallow bedrock, or a high water table usually require a larger field or an engineered system such as a mound, sand filter, or aerobic unit. Get the perc test done before collecting bids.
Engineered systems add parts and work that a gravity system does not need: a treatment unit or imported sand, a pump chamber with controls and an alarm, a licensed electrician, and a stamped design.
A mound system also builds a raised sand bed above the natural grade, which means far more material and machine time. On the same 3-bedroom Midwest site, a mound is most likely about $31,100 versus $14,300 for conventional. Aerobic units also need power and an ongoing service contract.
