Angle of Depression Calculator

Find the angle of depression from an elevated point down to a target. Start from height & distance, a known angle plus a height, or a known angle plus a distance, and get the angle of depression, the line-of-sight (slant) distance, the matching angle of elevation, the slope grade and the distance:height ratio — with by-angle and by-distance tables, a chart, and a downloadable PDF. Works in feet, meters or yards.

Angle of depression = arctan(height ÷ distance); line of sight = √(height² + distance²); grade = height ÷ distance × 100; ratio = distance ÷ height. The angle of depression measured down from the observer equals the angle of elevation measured back up from the target (alternate interior angles of the two parallel horizontal lines). Measure the vertical height and the level horizontal distance from the same reference point, and confirm field measurements before relying on the result. A geometry aid only.
