Vertical Curve Calculator

Design a roadway vertical curve. Enter the incoming and outgoing grades, the curve length and the PVI station and elevation, and get the curve type (crest or sag), the K value, the PVC/PVI/PVT stations and elevations, the high or low point, and a station-by-station elevation profile — with an optional AASHTO stopping-sight-distance K check by design speed, a profile table, a K-value table, a profile chart, and a downloadable PDF. US units (feet, stations, percent grades).

US units (feet, stations, percent grades). A = g2 − g1; K = L ÷ |A|; elevation = PVC elevation + g1 × x + (A ÷ 2L) × x² with x measured from the PVC and grades in percent; high/low point x = −g1 × L ÷ A; mid-curve offset = A × L ÷ 800; minimum length = K × |A|. AASHTO minimum K values shown are for stopping sight distance and are rounded — passing sight distance, drainage (a minimum 0.3% grade through sag curves), rider comfort and headlight criteria may govern instead. A planning aid only, not a substitute for AASHTO design procedures or review by a licensed engineer.

Grade change A = g2 − g1. A negative A is a crest curve; a positive A is a sag curve.

Elevation = PVC elevation + g1·x + (A ÷ 2L)·x², with x measured from the PVC.
