How the cooling load is calculated
Equipment size comes from your home’s heat gain. The calculator starts with floor area times a climate factor, scales it for ceiling height, insulation, and sun, adds the loads from windows, occupants, and the kitchen, then converts BTU into tons. Here is the exact math.
Worked example — 1,500 sq ft home, moderate climate (Zone 3), 8-ft ceilings
Base load: 1,500 × 22 = 33,000 BTU
Envelope: 33,000 × 1.00 × 1.00 × 1.00 = 33,000 BTU
Internal gains: 600 (1 extra person) + 8,000 (8 windows) + 4,000 (kitchen) = 12,600
Cooling load: (33,000 + 12,600) × 1.05 = 47,880 BTU
Tons: 47,880 ÷ 12,000 = 3.99 → 4.0 tons, Furnace: 1,500 × 35 × 1.05 ≈ 55,125 → 60,000 BTU
